European Football Alliance Strengthens Expansion Strategy with Enhanced Expansion Committee Mandate and Launch of Franchise Residency Programme
The European Football Alliance (EFA) has today announced an expanded mandate for its Expansion Committee alongside the launch of its new Franchise Residency Programme, a structured development pathway designed to support future ownership groups, strengthen existing franchises and guide the league’s long-term growth across Europe.
The announcement marks the next phase of the EFA’s expansion strategy following the successful launch of its inaugural season in 2026. Rather than pursuing rapid growth, the league is focused on building sustainable, professionally operated clubs capable of delivering long-term value for their communities, partners and supporters.
Supporting the Next Generation of EFA Franchises
The Expansion Committee will continue to oversee the development of the league’s existing clubs while providing direct support to franchises preparing to join the EFA.
The Committee is coordinating league-wide expertise across stadium development, commercial partnerships, governance and operational planning to ensure every franchise enters the league with strong foundations and a clear pathway for long-term success.
This collaborative approach reflects the EFA’s commitment to growing alongside its clubs, investing in sustainable infrastructure rather than prioritising expansion for expansion’s sake.
Securing Europe’s Priority Markets
Alongside supporting current franchises, the Expansion Committee has identified a number of Priority Markets where the league intends to establish future franchises.
Rather than relying solely on unsolicited applications, the Committee will proactively engage with prospective ownership groups in strategically important markets, identifying partners who share the EFA’s long-term vision for professional American football in Europe.
As part of this process, the EFA is launching a selective Invitation Process for a limited number of expansion opportunities from the 2028 season onwards. Invitations will be issued on a rolling basis in line with the league’s measured expansion model.
Introducing the Franchise Residency Programme
Central to the league’s expansion strategy is the new Franchise Residency Programme, a structured 12 to 18-month integration period for incoming ownership groups before they begin on-field competition.
During residency, future franchises become fully integrated into league operations, participating in governance, accessing centralised league services and working towards clearly defined market development milestones.
Without the immediate financial commitment of player payroll, ownership groups are able to focus on establishing long-term success by securing stadium agreements, developing commercial partnerships, building local fan engagement and creating sustainable operational infrastructure.
The programme is designed to ensure every new franchise enters the EFA fully prepared to compete both on and off the field.
A Transparent Expansion Framework
To support high-quality franchise development, the Expansion Committee has established a comprehensive evaluation and onboarding process that includes:
- A standardised franchise proposal framework with clearly defined development milestones and performance indicators.
- A transparent approval process from initial engagement through to full league admission.
- Dedicated league support across stadium strategy, sponsorship development, governance and operational delivery.
Over the coming months, the Committee will begin a series of targeted discussions with qualified institutional investors, family offices and experienced sports ownership groups as it explores future expansion opportunities.
Leadership Perspective
“European American football is entering a defining phase” said John McKeon, Chairman of the EFA Expansion Committee. “Our mandate is not simply to expand, but to do so with discipline, supporting our current franchises, securing the right markets, and partnering with ownership groups aligned with long-term value creation under an NFL-like league structure.”
Future Expansion Opportunities
The Expansion Committee welcomes discussions with qualified institutional partners, family offices and experienced sports ownership groups interested in becoming part of the EFA’s long-term vision. Enquiries can be directed to contact@efafootball.com
