Frankfurt Beats Prague 37–34 in Thriller

Frankfurt Galaxy stopped its losing streak at the decisive moment. After three consecutive defeats, Galaxy defeated the Prague Lions 37–34 on the road to close out the regular season and secure its BIG4 ticket on its own terms. In a game that remained open until the final minutes, Frankfurt repeatedly pulled ahead, Prague kept fighting back, but in the end Galaxy managed to protect its lead and run out the clock.

That also sets the first semifinal: Frankfurt will face the Munich Ravens at home next Saturday. Ahead of the German Derby, Galaxy returns from Prague with more than just a desperately needed victory. Frankfurt also delivered a significantly improved offensive performance.

Moore Opens the Game with a Bang

The game could hardly have started any better for Frankfurt. Ahsan Moore fielded the opening kickoff at his own end zone and took it 100 yards all the way back for a touchdown. Just 17 seconds into the game, Galaxy led 7–0.

Prague responded with a field goal from Marek Hrubon, but Frankfurt struck again. Zach Calzada found Brevin Easton for a 33-yard touchdown to make it 14–3. The Lions refused to go away. Quarterback Jaylon Henderson used his tremendous mobility and cut the deficit to 14–10 with a 30-yard touchdown run.

The second quarter was considerably quieter. Hrubon brought Prague within one point with a 43-yard field goal, but the most spectacular play belonged to Ryan Rimmler. After an interception by Jaylen Clay gave Frankfurt the ball with eleven seconds remaining before halftime, Rimmler converted an impressive 62-yard field goal as time expired to give Galaxy a 17–13 halftime lead.

Galaxy Takes Control After Halftime

Frankfurt’s offense found its rhythm after the break. A 92-yard drive lasted more than six minutes and was finished by Gerald Ameln, who raced 38 yards into the end zone.

Prague answered immediately. Henderson connected with Keyon Lesane Sr. for a 46-yard touchdown to cut the score to 23–20. But once again, Frankfurt had an answer. Calzada went deep and found Easton again, this time for 56 yards and a 30–20 lead.

Easton emerged as Galaxy’s most important receiver of the afternoon. The wide receiver caught five passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns. At the same time, Frankfurt’s running game was working as well. Antony Marvyn Bouembe finished with 113 yards on 18 carries, while Ameln added another 60 yards and a touchdown. In total, Frankfurt rushed for 182 yards and averaged an impressive 6.3 yards per carry.

Calzada Delivers in His Second Game for Galaxy

Especially important for Frankfurt was the performance of Zach Calzada. After his difficult debut against Nordic Storm, the quarterback delivered a much more efficient performance in Prague.

Calzada completed 14 of 19 passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns. He did not throw an interception and was not sacked once. Frankfurt produced 365 total yards of offense and was perfect on third downs after halftime, converting all six attempts in the second half.

After the changes at quarterback and three consecutive defeats, it was exactly the kind of offensive stability Frankfurt needed immediately before the playoffs.

Ahsan Moore also described after the game how the energy within the team fed off itself:

“The offense pushes the defense, the defense pushes the offense.”

Henderson and Lesane Keep Prague Alive

Although the Lions had already been eliminated from the BIG4 race before the final week of the regular season, they closed out their campaign with a strong fight.

Henderson was once again the central figure. The quarterback threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns while adding 85 rushing yards and two more scores on the ground. His scrambles and quarterback runs in particular repeatedly caused problems for the Galaxy defense. Prague finished with 436 total yards of offense and 26 first downs.

His most important target was Keyon Lesane Sr. With twelve receptions for 148 yards and a touchdown, he was extremely difficult to contain. Martin Havelka added 52 receiving yards and another score.

After Havelka’s 33-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter, the score was suddenly just 30–27.

Frankfurt Keeps Finding an Answer

It was in exactly this phase that Galaxy showed perhaps its most important quality of the afternoon. Instead of allowing the momentum to completely swing toward the Lions, Frankfurt responded with a controlled 58-yard drive.

Calzada first found Adria Botella Moreno for 20 yards and later connected with Tyler Foster on an important third down. Eight plays after the drive began, the quarterback found Normen Schumm from eight yards out to make it 37–27.

Prague still refused to surrender. Henderson led his team on a six-minute, 88-yard drive before scoring the touchdown himself to make it 37–34.

There were still 3:31 left to play.

Frankfurt, however, never gave the ball back. Bouembe rushed for three more first downs, Prague was forced to use its remaining timeouts and Calzada was eventually able to kneel out the game.

Frankfurt Takes Momentum into the German Derby

The final margin was narrow, but for Galaxy this afternoon was about more than a three-point victory. After the difficult past few weeks, Frankfurt desperately needed another positive result.

Galaxy played turnover-free football, allowed no sacks and showed important offensive balance with 182 rushing yards, something that could become enormously valuable in the BIG4. At the same time, Calzada delivered his strongest performance in a Galaxy uniform in just his second game in Europe.

Frankfurt finishes the regular season with a 4–6 record and advances to the BIG4. A completely new challenge now awaits.

On Saturday, Galaxy will face the Munich Ravens in Frankfurt. After three consecutive defeats, Frankfurt returns from Prague not with another disappointment, but with a victory, renewed confidence and a playoff ticket.
