Friday Night Lights in Frankfurt: Galaxy and Paris open the new EFA season
The new European Football Alliance begins immediately with a true blockbuster matchup. On Friday night, Frankfurt Galaxy hosts the Paris Musketeers in the first official game in league history. Inside PSD Bank Arena, the “Friday Night Lights” event is expected to deliver not only a major football atmosphere, but also an early statement for the future of European football. Two ambitious organizations. Two talented rosters. And right away, a matchup that could show where both teams stand in the inaugural EFA season.
A new era officially begins in Frankfurt. After a one year absence, Thomas Kösling returns to the sideline as Head Coach of Frankfurt Galaxy. Together with Offensive Coordinator Brandon Corbin, the former championship coach is expected to lead the organization back toward the top of European football. Following a turbulent offseason and several major roster changes, Kösling has been especially pleased with the chemistry inside the new coaching staff during the past few weeks.
“It’s really been a great collaboration. The things we focused on during the recruiting process have all proven true so far. The intensity the coaches bring and how invested they are is a huge difference compared to last year,” explained Kösling.
Frankfurt Galaxy also reshaped large parts of the roster during the offseason. Several well known names, including quarterback Jameson Wang and running back Sandro Platzgummer, are no longer part of the organization. At the same time, Frankfurt brought in a number of impact additions expected to contribute immediately.
The centerpiece of the new offense is quarterback Ethan Garbers. The former UCLA signal caller is expected to lead Frankfurt Galaxy into the new era and has already impressed during his first weeks with the team. Offensive Coordinator Brandon Corbin especially praised Garbers’ football IQ, leadership and composure.
“Our quarterback is an exceptional football player. You will not find a smarter football player than Ethan Garbers,” said Brandon Corbin.
Frankfurt also added more talent around its new quarterback. Adria Botella Moreno arrives as one of the most experienced tight ends in European football, while Tyler Foster and Ahsan Moore add two of the most exciting German wide receiver talents in the league. Defensively, the return of Sebastian Silva Gomez gives Frankfurt additional leadership and energy on that side of the ball.
On the opposite sideline, however, waits one of the toughest opponents in the entire EFA. The Paris Musketeers enter their third season under Head Coach Jack Del Rio. The former NFL Head Coach remains one of the biggest names in European football and once again reshaped large parts of the roster after narrowly missing the playoffs last season.
Several key players left the organization during the offseason. Quarterback Jaylon Henderson and defensive lineman Artis DeMarco both joined other teams, while Anthony Mahoungou retired from football. The biggest transition may have happened along the offensive line, where only four starters from last season remain on the roster.
Despite those changes, Paris still enters the season as one of the most dangerous teams in the league. A major reason is the return of quarterback Zach Edwards. After taking one year away from football, one of the most productive quarterbacks in Europe returns to the field. Edwards combines a strong arm with mobility and toughness, regularly extending plays and refusing to avoid contact as a runner. Frankfurt Galaxy already knows exactly how dangerous the veteran quarterback can be from previous matchups over the past years.
Around Edwards, Paris also added several players with Canadian college football experience to further increase the athletic level of the roster. The most notable addition besides Edwards is defensive lineman Andre Carter. The former NFL player spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals and Jacksonville Jaguars and could immediately become a nightmare matchup for opposing offensive lines.
Even with all the talent on both sides, the season opener remains difficult to predict. Many teams across the EFA enter the year with new head coaches, new quarterbacks and completely new systems. That is exactly why Frankfurt Head Coach Thomas Kösling mainly wants to see a disciplined performance from his team.
“You don’t win a championship in the first game and you also don’t lose one. Of course we want to win, especially in front of our home crowd. But Paris is immediately one of the top favorites,” stated Thomas Kösling.
With Friday Night Lights, two high profile quarterbacks and countless new storylines, European football receives the perfect stage right from the beginning of the new league. And after months filled with uncertainty and discussions surrounding the future of the sport, fans across Europe are now ready for one thing above all else: football finally being back at the center of attention.
