Paris punches BIG4 ticket and ends Raiders’ playoff dream

The Paris Musketeers are going to the BIG4. After five consecutive losses had put their playoff hopes in serious danger, Paris delivered when it mattered most and defeated the Raiders Tirol 33–12 at Tivoli Stadion in Innsbruck. For the Raiders, the defeat brought a remarkable late-season comeback attempt to an end. After starting the season with seven straight losses, Tirol had revived its playoff hopes with back-to-back wins over Frankfurt Galaxy and the Prague Lions and entered the final week knowing that one more victory would secure a place in the postseason. Instead, the Musketeers rediscovered their form at exactly the right moment and claimed the fourth and final playoff spot.

Paris set the tone immediately. Quarterback Zach Edwards orchestrated a patient 71-yard opening drive that took more than six minutes off the clock before finding Hugo Tekedam for a 38-yard touchdown. Tirol responded with a promising possession of its own, but penalties pushed the Raiders backwards and Jonata Loria eventually missed a 53-yard field goal. Paris punished the missed opportunity as Dean Faithfull converted from 29 yards to make it 10–0. The Musketeers continued to control proceedings in the second quarter, putting together another long drive before Edwards connected with Torin Justice for a 25-yard touchdown and a 16–0 advantage. Tirol finally found an answer shortly before halftime when Kenyatte Allen found Marco Schneider for a 19-yard score, sending the Raiders into the locker room trailing 16–6 but still very much alive.

Fumble changes the game

The Raiders came out aggressively after halftime and immediately threatened to make it a one-score game. Allen opened the second half with a 29-yard completion to Schneider and continued moving the offense deep into Paris territory. Tirol eventually reached the 15-yard line, but what looked like the beginning of a comeback instead became the decisive moment of the afternoon. Jack Loew forced Allen to fumble, Yani Gouadfel recovered the football and returned it 50 yards into Raiders territory. Only twelve seconds later, Edwards connected with Justice for a 37-yard touchdown. Instead of potentially cutting the deficit to three points, Tirol suddenly found itself trailing 23–6.

The Raiders refused to surrender. Late in the third quarter, they put together an explosive 80-yard scoring drive that ended with Allen finding Felix Kantner for a 23-yard touchdown. The failed two-point conversion left the score at 23–12, giving Tirol at least some hope entering the final quarter. But Paris never allowed the momentum to shift again. Nicolas Khandar broke free for a spectacular 61-yard run early in the fourth quarter and three plays later Edwards found Hassane Dosso for another touchdown, extending the lead to 30–12. From there, the Musketeers’ defense took complete control. Tirol failed on two fourth-down attempts and Faithfull eventually added a 48-yard field goal to seal the 33–12 victory.

Edwards and the Paris defense deliver

Edwards produced one of his strongest performances of the season on the day Paris needed him most. The Musketeers quarterback completed 15 of 23 passes for 245 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Justice emerged as his most dangerous target with four receptions for 89 yards and two touchdowns, while Tekedam added 60 yards and a score and Dosso finished with 73 yards and another touchdown. Paris also found the offensive balance it had been missing during its losing streak. Khandar rushed for 85 yards on eleven carries, Jason Bofunda added 45 and Edwards contributed another 37 as the Musketeers accumulated 180 rushing yards and 425 yards of total offense.

Just as important was the performance on the other side of the ball. Paris put Allen under relentless pressure and recorded eight sacks for a combined loss of 38 yards. Demarco Artis led the way with two sacks, while Stanley Zeregbe contributed 1.5. Digaan Gomis, Ilan Barbaras, Jack Loew and Kenny Tia were also involved in bringing down the Tirol quarterback. That pressure effectively eliminated the Raiders’ running game. Tirol finished with only 11 net rushing yards on 21 attempts and averaged just 0.5 yards per carry. Allen still threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, while Aaron Jackson caught eight passes and accumulated 148 all-purpose yards, but the Raiders never found the offensive consistency they had shown during their previous two victories.

Paris survives, Tirol’s comeback ends

The final numbers underline how complete the Paris performance was. The Musketeers outgained the Raiders 425 to 266 yards, converted nine of 14 third downs and controlled possession for more than 33 minutes. Three of their first four offensive possessions produced points, and whenever Tirol threatened to turn the game around, Paris found an answer. After five consecutive defeats and a second half of the season in which their once comfortable playoff position had gradually disappeared, the Musketeers produced their most important victory of the year when there was no margin for error.

For the Raiders, meanwhile, a turbulent season ends just short of an extraordinary turnaround. Seven consecutive defeats to begin the campaign appeared to have ended any realistic playoff hopes, but the arrival of Allen and an improving offensive line changed the complexion of the team. Consecutive victories over Frankfurt and Prague suddenly put Tirol in control of its own destiny heading into Week 13. A third straight win would have completed an unlikely journey from 0–7 to the BIG4. Paris had other plans. The Musketeers finish the regular season at 4–6 and advance as the fourth seed, while the Raiders close their inaugural EFA campaign at 2–8.

For Paris, the reward is a place on the biggest stage of the season so far. The Musketeers will face regular-season champion and number-one seed Nordic Storm in the BIG4 semifinals. After five losses in a row, Paris has finally stopped the slide. Now the records are reset, the regular season is over and one victory separates the Musketeers from the EFA Championship Game.
